The Brampton Quilter's Guild had their show, Patchwork Parade, on the weekend of May 10th & 11th, 2003 in Brampton, and presented the OQC Rosette to Marlene Smith. Marlene's Friendship Star Jacket, was awarded the ribbon as it received the most votes of any item in the show from the Viewer's Choice ballots.
Marlene's comments about her piece:
The Friendship Star Jacket is my first attempt at quilted clothing. It is made from a kit designed by Lorraine Stagness of Country Creations in Strathmore, AB. I had never done stipple quilting before and was very apprehensive, but I was surprised to find it was not half as difficult as I had anticipated. In fact, I had great fun doing it! My biggest challenge was lining up the horizontal stripes when putting in the zipper. After many attempts, I was successful. All in all, I enjoyed making this jacket immensely. I am extremely surprised and honoured to receive this award. To everyone who voted for my Friendship Star Jacket, thank you. I am happy you like it! I know I will enjoy wearing it for many years to come.
